The launching ceremony of Huizhou Transit Roadway Project was held at Jiangbei  Sanxin yesterday morning, which was the first good news for Huizhou citizens in this new year.

Over 500 people including President Wang Jun, vice general manager Dou Jianzhong, Li Shiling and Zhao Jingwen of CITIC, general manager Guo Zhirong  of CITIC Shenzhen, high-rank officials in the two companies, municipal leaders Tian Yeru, Liu Jinzhou, Tang Pinhui, distinguished guests in all circles from Beijing, Hongkong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and journalists attended the ceremony.

Wang Jun delivered the opening speech at the ceremony. He first congratulated on the smooth launch of Huizhou Transit Roadway project and said it was the first large infrastructure project that CITIC Shenzhen sponsored, in response to Central government’s policy of expanding domestic market and improving infrastructure construction. He also indicated that CITIC has always been devoted to keeping a good cooperative relation with Huizhou and believed that the construction projects invested in Huizhou are bound to have a bright prospect.

Liu Jinzhou, the mayor and vice secretary of Huizhou committee of CPC also delivered an address at the ceremony. He said Huizhou was the important hub of transportation in East Canton area but with the rapid development of economy, more and more transit traffic put great pressure on the artery of the city. In fact, the building of a wide, safe, comfortable, and high-speed transit roadway, which may avoid the interference with the major roads inside the city, was listed on the urban development program as early as several years ago.  CITIC made an offer in time and decided to invest one billion yuan in the construction of Huizhou Transit Roadway and the Fourth Dongjiang Bridge and signed the contract of investment framework with Hui Zhou Municipal government on 23 July, 2001. When the project is completed, it will become the transit artery passed by National Highway 205 and 324 and greatly relieve the traffic pressure in the city. Meanwhile, its completion will plat an significant role in promoting the level of the urban roadway network, improving the highway network in Zhujiang Delta and pushing regional economic development.

Liu Jinzhou also said, “we wish the launch of the transit roadway construction project is only the beginning step of CITIC’s investment plan in promoting Huizhou’s economic development and more cooperation projects are expected in the future.  The investment and consruction plan of Huizhou’s economic and social development from other enterprises, companies and groups are also welcomed. Under the spirit of ‘making investors rich, helping Huizhou develop’, we would like to contribute to Huizhou’s bright future together with investors.”

According to the project, Huizhou Transit Roadway starts at Gutang’ao, joining national highway 205, passes eastwards Henan’an town and Lake Jinshen, joining Hui’ao Highway, and then runs northwards to Dahuxi, joining national highway 324, passes Shuikou Town and crosses the fourth Dongjiang bridge, from which the main line goes northwards, passing Wushi, to the destination Yewu at Xiaojinkou town, joining national highway 205, while the tributary line moves westwards, passing Wushi, Sanxin and crossing national highway 324, to the destination Lake Mu, joining Huibo Road. The transit road is 26 kilometers long and adopts the first-grade highway design with a driving speed of 60 kilometers/hour. The total investment of the project reaches RMB 1000,000,000, among which 90% is contributed by CITIC Shenzhen and 10% is invested by Huizhou Road and Bridge Company. The whole project is to be completed in three years.

The vice mayor Lin Huichun hosted the launching ceremony and the general manager Guo Zhirong of CITIC Shenzhen delivered a speech.

Aaron Yan and Gui Gui Story: Did Aaron Yan and Gui Gui of Pi Li MIT really have a fight with each other?! Today Aaron Yan and Gui Gui cleared things up by their actions when they went on Channel V’s Wo Ai He Se Hui. Channel V’s Hey Girl came together to welcome the guests as well. As to whether Aaron Yan and Gui Gui had a fight, it was not seen at all. But Xiao Gui, felt that the scene was not hyper enough, emphasizing that Aaron Yan and Gui Gui really didn’t fight, it’s just that they like to have small squabbles like little children. For instance, there was once when Aaron Yan said that Gui Gui could not act, making Gui Gui fight back in defence, saying that Aaron Yan acts like a girl. As the cat was let out of the box, it caused Gui Gui to feel so shy that she felt like digging a hole to hide herself. She then said, “We really didn’t fight!”

Not long ago Aaron Yan told the media that if the viewership ratings of Pi Li MIT were to break 5, he would drive a motorcycle bare naked. During the filming of Wo Ai He Se Hui today, Xiao Gui was asked what he would do. Without any hesitation, he said that if the ratings were to break 5, he will kiss Aaron Yan, if not he will go bald. Gui Gui exclaimed, “So meek.” When this question was posted to Gui Gui, she exclaimed that if they hit their goal, she would shave her head bald and meet everybody without any make-up. This remark made Xiao Gui and Aaron Yan very surprised, making their doubt whether this is a good thing to do. Gui Gui then exclaimed, “Don’t you guys know that there is a thing called a wig?”

This blog gives the following details: During the program, there was a request for Aaron Yan and Gui Gui to present how the kissing scene went in the drama. Xiao Gui himself knew that this is what the media is looking for, it must definitely appear in the papers. She acted badly, causing the director to get mad at her. He scolded her very badly, even all the swear words started to come out, causing Gui Gui to cry on set. But she didn’t forget her mission. In the end, she brought out the birthday cake, crying as she celebrated the director’s birthday, causing the latter to feel extremely apologetic.

Boston’s first 2009 baby, Elijah Jamil Pierre, was born at 12:03 a.m., weighing in at 6 pounds 12 ounces.

“(His health) is the most important thing,” said Elijah’s mother, Juna Delinois. “New Year’s baby doesn’t matter. Just as long as he’s healthy.”

“My heart is pounding,” said Elijah’s father, Eddie Pierre “I can’t explain it. He’s just beautiful.”

The Mattapan couple says one day they will share with their son the story of his birth.

“We will clip all the newspaper clippings so he can see it when he gets older,” Delinois said. “Maybe he’ll have a New Year’s baby one day.”

Elijah isn’t the family’s first New Year’s baby. His aunt, Stacey St. Louis, is also a New Year’s baby.

Delinois said she knew she was in good hands during the delivery because the same doctor that delivered her when she was born also delivered baby Elijah.

It’s the couple’s first child.

“We have huge aspirations for him, but we will let him decide,” Pierre said when asked what he thinks his son will be some day.

Elijah was scheduled to be born on Dec. 31, 2008. His mother was in labor with him for 15 hours.

Why the hell do some people do that? Black, White, Asian, Spanish, it’s all the f’n same. The very first comment I see is, quote…great,wonderful, I’m so happy 2 see a black baby…unquote. Is that really necessary? I didn’t even think about the newborns race until I read that, it’s an indirect form of racism…Not as harsh as that ignorant turd calling that sweet innocent child a nig, but not a lot different. What a precious blessing! I’m just wondering how accurate this article is though. I’ve seen an article fron New Jersey where a little boy was born 1 second after midnight  and another one from Ohio where a little girl was born at 12:01 a.m.

But what I can say is that I had no idea what an extraordinary musician he is. And it’s just great to sit and be witness t that. It’s kind of like, Whoa!”

Aniston’s currently working on a film called Pumas, which she calls “sort of a female Wedding Crashers” about two “aspiring cougars.”

“It is so a comment on the sexual double standard, and what’s been ironic is how hard it’s been to get this movie made,” she says. “Studios want it, but they are afraid of Middle America. They’d want to change it; they’re saying, ‘Oh, you can’t do that, people just can’t imagine you…”

It’s part of what she sees as a disturbing problem in Hollywood.

“Look, I think all women on some level just want to rage against the machine,” she says. “There are too many movies out there that don’t empower women, movies in which their only way of being happy is finding a man. And you know, that’s not my favorite theme.” Editing by Alice Lee

Four suspected terrorists refuse to talk about what they know about Sept. 11 and Al Qaida’s plans for the future, the Washington Post reports: Zacarias Moussaoui, the French Moroccan who wanted to learn how to fly jets but not how to land them; Mohammed Jaweed Azmath and Ayub Ali Khan, the two Indians who deplaned in St. Louis on the morning of Sept. 11 when all flights were ordered to land and were detained the next day in Fort Worth, Texas, after they were found with box cutters, hair dye, and $5,000 in cash; and Nabil Almarabh, a former Boston cabdriver thought to have ties to Al Qaida. A former senior FBI official proposed that investigators could use a “truth serum” to get the four suspects to talk. Does truth serum work?

Not in the sense that it makes people tell the truth. So-called truth serums lower your inhibitions, and as a result you may become chattier but not necessarily more truthful. Losing your inhibitions isn’t the same as losing your self-control. Subjects who have been administered a “truth serum” can lie, they can fantasize, and they can be manipulated into telling falsehoods by an interviewer’s suggestions and cues.

Barbiturates such as scopolamine, sodium amytal, and sodium pentothal were first touted as truth serums in the early 20th century. Because they inhibit control of the central nervous system, truth serums were supposed to induce a hypnotic “twilight” state that elicited a mechanical recitation of truth. In reality, though, the only good truth serums are found in bad science fiction.

Researchers could have found a much older (and equally unreliable) claim of truth-telling for a similar drug in the old phrase in vino veritas. As Lindsey vs. United States, a 1956 federal appeals court decision, found, “The intravenous injection of a drug by a physician in a hospital may appear more scientific than the drinking of large amounts of bourbon in a tavern, but the end result displayed in the subject’s speech may be no more reliable.” If a terrorist has something he wants to get off his chest, he may be more apt to tell you about it while drunk or drugged. But you might learn about his propensity to wear his mother’s burqa when he was a child, or his sinful crush on Madonna, and not his plan to blow up the Eiffel Tower. Or he may tell you lies, or he may tell you nothing at all.

The Supreme Court decided in 1963 that a truth serum-induced confession was unconstitutionally coerced. More recently, state courts have found truth serum-induced testimony to be scientifically unreliable and inadmissible.

Explainer addendum: Just because the Supreme Court rejected the use of truth serum in the past doesn’t mean it will in the future. As Explainer pointed out recently, the Supreme Court wrote in June that terrorism may require “heightened deference to the judgments of the political branches with respect to matters of national security.” So the former FBI official quoted by the Post could be right that “you could reach a point where they allow us to apply drugs to a guy.” But that doesn’t mean that applying drugs to a guy would necessarily do any good.

Of course they will use this, and of course they will publicize the results to further their agendas with support from an ill informed citizenry.

As a parlor game, yes truth serum (like the polygraph) is an excellent amusement. Credibility? Nah, gullibility is a better word.

Truth serums are “sedatives that interfere particularly with judgment and higher cognitive function,” according to Wikipedia.

Nothing to kid about. While we’re on the topic, check out the more acceptable (and much less effective ways) to try promote confession.

All of you know how much needs to be done to take meaningful steps to end domestic violence and sexual assault. President Clinton recognized the seriousness of the problem when he signed the Violence Against Women Act as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. In the past year, the Department of Justice has sought to combine tough federal penalties along with substantial resources to the states to begin dealing with the problem of domestic violence in a comprehensive, multi-faceted way. States and local law enforcement agencies have been encouraged to begin programs that will enhance their ability to prevent domestic violence, to punish it and to stop the cycle of violence. The Act also established a:

President Clinton has called on all the Departments of the Federal government to develop employee awareness campaigns to help combat domestic violence.
